Is Pet Insurance really worth it?! YES!

We speak about pet insurance on a daily basis here at Animal Health Center of Salisbury. You would think I work for an insurance company or even get something out of explaining the benefits to pet owners...but I don't. I just believe it is incredibly helpful!

Sometimes before I begin my pet insurance spiel, I get the lifted eyebrow, eyes rolled, sighing, "Yeah, but how much is it?" reaction. Already having a negative idea that it is expensive. The amount of money you spend a week on coffee equals to or is even more than a months premium for your cat or dog to be covered. I have seen pet insurance work wonders.

Pet insurance is a reimbursement plan. It is not your typical health insurance. You choose how much you want your pet to be covered for. It starts at $5000/year and goes up to an unlimited amount. Then you choose your annual deductible. How much you're going to pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. This amount ranges from $100 to $1000. Then you pick your reimbursement percentage. Meaning, what percentage the insurance company is going to reimburse you after your deductible has been met. For example, Fluffy needed a surgery and it was $1100. Your deductible is $100 and your reimbursement percentage is 90%. You will initially pay the hospital $1100. However, the insurance will see that you have a deductible of $100 and will reimburse you 90% of the $1000. That is a total of a $900 reimbursement on an $1100 surgery! And if anything should happen afterwards in the same policy year, it would be a straight reimbursement. Meaning, if Fluffy had to come back 2 weeks later for something else and your bill was $100, you would get a straight reimbursement of $90 out of the $100, because you had already satisfied your deductible. Check it out for yourself.
